SAFETY NEWS- Christmas Trees in Schools

Christmas Trees in Schools

Each year, as the holiday season approaches, Colorado School District Self Insurance Pool receives numerous inquiries related to the use of Christmas trees in schools for holiday decorations.  Because of the potential safety hazards to students and staff posed by the use of certain types of decorations, the following information is provided. The source of reference is the 2003 International Fire Code to which all schools in the State of Colorado must comply.

Natural cut trees are prohibited in educational facilities.  There is one exception to this prohibition.  This exception has to do with the area in which the tree will be placed.  And the question to ask is this:

Does the area have an operational/ approved sprinkler system?

If you answer Yes… then you are allowed to have natural cut trees IF you comply with the following requirements…

·        You must use a tree stand that will hold at least a two day water supply.

·        The water supply must cover the tree stem by at least two inches.

·        The stand must be able to support the tree in an upright condition and the tree must be stable.

·        The tree stand water supply must be checked daily and replaced as it recedes past the two inch requirement line.

·        The tree must be checked daily for dryness.

·        Trees must be removed whenever the needles or leaves fall off readily or the limbs or branches become brittle.

·        Natural cut trees shall be kept a distance from heat vents and any open flame or heat producing devices at least equal to the height of the tree.

·        Use of an open flame on a tree or near a tree is prohibited.

·        The use of unlisted electrical wiring and lighting on trees is prohibited.

·        The trees (or other decorations) must not block any portion of any egress.

Now you may be thinking it may not be worth it and you will just use a “fake” tree. (Or maybe you don’t have an approved/ operational sprinkler system.)  You still need to insure that the following requirements have been met.

  • Any “Fake” tree or artificial decorative vegetation must be flame resistant or flame retardant.  The manufacturer must have certified documentation stating that it complies with the flame retardance requirements.
  • Candles and open flames are not to be used on or near artificial decorative vegetation.
  • The use of unlisted electrical wiring and lighting on decorative vegetation is prohibited.
  • The use of electrical wiring and lighting on metal artificial trees is prohibited.
